چکیده

Abstract In Namibia, leopards ( Panthera pardus ) are widely distributed, used commercially as trophy animals and often persecuted for perceived or real predation on livestock valuable game species outside protected areas. Therefore, leopard populations living in areas might be important source maintaining connectivity. Little data their population sizes densities available from the northern part of country, particularly Here, we estimated densities using a spatial capture–recapture approach Namibia: (i) Khaudum National Park (KNP) north-east Namibia with an annual average rainfall 450 mm (ii) Lower Hoanib River (LHR) north-west 25 mm. With effort 2430 2074 camera trap nights KNP LHR, respectively, 11 adult female six male were identified KNP, whilst only one was detected once LHR. For maximum likelihood (using package SECR) revealed density estimate 2.74 leopards/100 km 2 , whereas Bayesian SPACECAP) 1.83 . no could determined it is suggested that such arid environment low. These first estimates based surveys provided these thus importance further monitoring programs to understand dynamics. We discuss our findings current habitat changes conservation measures both study

Conservation genetics of the Far Eastern leopard (Panthera pardus orientalis).

The Far Eastern or Amur leopard (Panthera pardus orientalis) survives today as a tiny relict population of 25-40 individuals in the Russian Far East. The population descends from a 19th-century northeastern Asian subspecies whose range extended over southeastern Russia, the Korean peninsula, and northeastern China. A molecular genetic survey of nuclear microsatellite and mitochondrial DNA (mtDN...

Hiatal hernia and diaphragmatic eventration in a leopard (Panthera pardus).

A 1-yr-old male leopard (Panthera pardus) presented for intermittent anorexia, emaciation, and generalized muscle wasting. Plain radiographs, ultrasonography, and esophageal endoscopy led to a diagnosis of diaphragmatic eventration with probable concurrent hiatal hernia. An exploratory laparotomy confirmed both diagnoses, and surgical repair and stabilization were performed. After surgery, the ...

Presence-absence surveys of prey and their use in predicting leopard (Panthera pardus) densities: a case study from Armenia.

It is important to predict how many individuals of a predator species can survive in a given area on the basis of prey sufficiency and to compare predictive estimates with actual numbers to understand whether or not key threats are related to prey availability. Rugged terrain and low detection probabilities do not allow for the use of traditional prey count techniques in mountain areas. We used...

Snow leopard (Panthera uncia) surveys in the Western Himalayas, India

We conducted surveys above 3000 m elevation in eight protected areas of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. These surveys provide new information on snow leopard in Uttarakhand on the basis of indirect evidence such as pugmark and scat. Snow leopard evidence (n = 13) were found between 3190 and 4115 m elevation. On an average, scats (n = 09) of snow leopard were found for every 56 km walked and p...
